Separate buildings turn into ruins, either through carelessness (lack of regular maintenance and repair), or due to intentional destruction. Localities become ruins due to population outflows, fighting, or natural disasters. In the absence of proper conservation, the ruins over time are steadily destroyed by weather factors and spontaneous disassembly into building materials.
There are cases when cities destroyed in ancient times by the elements, preserved for archaeologists a picture of the daily life of that time. Classical examples of this kind are Pompeii and Herculaneum, who died during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79.
In the Newest time, cities that have undergone extensive destruction are usually rebuilt. The harbinger of this approach was the restoration of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. Sometimes during the reconstruction of the city they try to recreate the buildings that existed before (as, for example, during the restoration of Warsaw and Dresden after the Second World War). More often the city is completely rebuilt (for example, they did it with Le Havre and Königsberg). As a reminder of the scale of destruction after the restoration of the city, one or more buildings are left in a ruined state: for example, the Carmelite convent in Lisbon, the Kaiser Wilhelm Church in Berlin, the Pavlova house in Volgograd.
During the past decades, cities such as Sarajevo, Kabul, Grozny, Baghdad, Aleppo were subjected to full or partial destruction during military operations.
